Why Study Biology? 

Biology is a fascinating and ever-changing subject which gives students an understanding of how the world around them, and indeed their own body, works. A level Biology lessons at JCG follow on from GCSE to give students a deeper understanding of topics such as cell structure; breathing and transport systems; biological molecules, enzymes and DNA; disease; biodiversity; classification and evolution; the nervous, endocrine and excretory systems; photosynthesis; respiration; genetics; biotechnology and ecology. In biology students not only learn facts, but also develop skills for life. Skills such as how to carry out in-depth scientific research; how to present well balanced arguments; how to work independently and as part of a team; how to carry out scientific investigations and how to analyse and present data effectively. 

Le cours 

The A level course is made up of six modules: 

• Development of Practical Skills in Biology 
• Foundations in Biology 
• Exchange and Transport 
• Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease 
• Communication, Homeostasis and Energy 
• Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems 

These are assessed by three exam papers: 

• Paper 1 is 2hrs 15mins and counts for 37% of the A level 
• Paper 2 is 2hrs 15mins and counts for 37% of the A level 
• Paper 3 is 1hr 30mins and counts for 26% of the A level 

Practical Endorsement 

In addition, students will complete a minimum of 12 practical activities which will be written up and held in a folder to be assessed on a pass or fail basis at the end of the course.. 

Opportunités 

Biology is important for students considering careers in areas such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry or forensic science. We provide opportunities for students to participate in lectures and workshops provided by internationally renowned scientists in areas of Biology such as genetics, neuroscience, medicine and conservation. 

All Year 12 students will have the opportunity to go on the Sixth Form Expedition to a remote part of the world. In the last expedition, students travelled to Croatia. Future groups may travel to Indonesia, Peru or Borneo. Although open to all Sixth Form students, for biologists, the work done on the expedition will greatly complement their A level studies. 

Year 13 students will also have the opportunity to represent JCG in the British Biology Olympiad, and possibly represent the UK in the International Olympiad.
